The defeat of italy’s forces in North Africa over the winter of 1940/41 threatened Germany’s ‘Fortress Europe’. For his own security, Hitler felt that he had no option but to intervene on behalf of his ally. By the middle of February 1941, the first contingent of German support had reached Tripoli. It was not very large – in fact, it consisted of one general and two staff officers; but the general was a man called Rommel. As the commanding officer of the ‘Ghost’ Division in France, Major-General Erwin Rommel had won a reputation as a brilliant commander. His orders were to stabilize the situation. Rommel’s force initially included only the Fifth Light Division. For the moment, he was simply expected to stiffen Italian resistance.
But Rommel would not wait. Within days, he was planning a full-scale counterattack. And with that began two years of cut-and-thrust battles with British and Commonwealth forces. The battlefield was to be the Libyan desert, an area aptly described as a tactician’s paradise and a quartermaster’s nightmare.
Afrika-Division
Rommel’s initial attack drove the British back through Libya and had reached the Egyptian border by mid-April. By this time, there was an assortment of German units of varying sizes arriving in North Africa, and in August the Afrika-Division z&V was created to control them. The first major action by the new unit came in November 1941, during Rommel’s unsuccessful attempt to capture the vital port of Tobruk. The Libyan port’s Commonwealth garrison had been cut off by advancing German and Italian forces in April, but was still holding out.
Later that month, the division was engaged in the first major tank battle of the campaign, when Rommel responded to the launch of the British Operation Crusader on 18 November by launching a rapid counterattack at Sidi Rezegh, a vital airfield about 25km (15.5 miles) southeast of Tobruk. After stopping the Allied advance, Rommel struck for the Halfaya Pass on the Egyptian border. But the British stood firm, and Auchinlcck, the commander-in-chief, ordered a further attack westwards to cut off Rommel’s forces. As a result, Rommel withdrew to Gazala. On 27 November 1941, the Afrika-Division received an official designation, becoming the 90 Leichte Infanterie-Division.
