Maisie had been enrolled for three months atthe local high school when disaster struck. One of the missionaries in thefield had taken ill, and had to return home. Their pastor had asked thePercivals if they could return to Kenya for a year on an emergencyassignment until other arrangements could be made. The question Al andNancy now presented to the commander and chief from their knees in theliving room was whether Maisie should accompany them back. The possibility of the youngster remaining State side was made possible bythe pastor’s offer to have the teenager live with him and his new wifeduring the crisis. The decision was an agonizing one for Maisie’sparents. To be separated from their only child for a year was nearlyunthinkable, on the other hand the political situation in Kenya hadseverely deteriorated and there was considerable danger. The Percivals wereprepared to accept the risk to themselves as part of their calling; theywere confident the Lord would protect them. To put Maisie in harm’s waywhen there was an alternative seemed selfish. Her parents were well awareof their daughter’s overwhelming desire to stay behind and continue herschooling at home. That was the conundrum the couple now presented to God. Pastor Sydney Koch was sixty years old and had recruited the Percivals tothe Mission ten years ago. He’d lost his wife to breast cancer five yearsago and at fifty-five expected to live the rest of his days as awidower. When Agnes Jenson joined his congregation three years ago hecouldn’t help being attracted to the beautiful outgoing thirty-eight yearold widow. Agnes told him she had lost her husband to the same dreadeddisease that had claimed his dear wife. Syd prayed long and hard before heproposed to missus Jenson. They’d tied the knot a year ago last August. The six foot two, lean, grey haired church leader straightened his suitjacket before pressing the door bell of the missionary’s front door. AlPercival greeted his earthly boss a moment later with a warm hand shake. “Thanks for coming Syd,” the missionary greeted his guest. “We really needguidance here.”
