William Strickland was born in November, 1788, at Navesink, New Jersey, a son of John and Elizabeth Strickland. His brothers were John and George. John (1791-1835) became a carpenter like his father, and married Jane Hurst on May 9, 1815, in Christ Church in Philadelphia. The youngest brother, who was born in 1797, studied drawing, painting, and engraving with his brother William. In the 1830’s, George left Philadelphia and became a clerk in the Patent Office in Washington.

William Strickland was one of the successful architects of the first half of the nineteenth century in the United States. His success may be measured by the number of important commissions which he received during his long career, the satisfactoriness of the buildings when they were new, and the pleasing quality of those which remain.

William Strickland was an architect for forty-six years, from 1808 until his death in 1854. During that time, there were a number of changes in architectural styles, in building materials, in methods of construction, and in the position of the architect in society.
